Inspired by Frida Kahlo’s painting A BROKEN COLUMN, I pay homage to her strength of spirit utilizing her style of symbolism. I show her damaged torso emerging from a Pre-Columbian fertility goddess to express her Mexicanidad as well as her fascination with the spiritual world of rebirth, reinvention, even reincarnation. Her back brace has attached butterfly wings to show her strength against hardships and ability to overcome obstacles. Tiny egg-like lights fill her open chest symbolizing her creativity that always keeps her going.
